Let's talk about Modeling!

I want to share this wonderful article on modeling. It really helps to have CORE vocabulary and tangibles available "on the spot" to use while communicating "TO" our learners. I especially like #2: Model without expecting a response! Model, presume competence, no need to expect a response at first! I attached a giant CORE communication board to my "speech cart." I literally roll around the school building with a large communication board with me at all times! http://www.speakforyourself.org/2014/11/13/core-vocabulary-phrases-can-model-today/

Thank you so much for sharing! My fellow SLPs and I have a core word of the week that we work on. This has fantastic ideas for us to implement!

I think the best part of the whole BIG Core was seeing the attention levels of the students increase while putting sentences together! :) When your board is complete, please post a photo!

My colleague, the wonderful Laura Cusumano, made a medium, high contrast version! It's more portable than this one and made a huge splash in our school!

Karen I love that you introduced these boards in all different sizes and shapes into our classrooms and appreciate the accessibility it gives to students. (In my classroom we use a smaller version that is appropriate to our learners 22-26 yer old)

I use it for modeling and keep it nearby when I'm in the classroom- often placing my cart near the front of the classroom. Most of the teachers have made their own to use. We're working on trying to come up with 3-dimensional versions of these very hard concepts to symbolize: go, stop, more, look, like, don't like, etc. Any ideas? (And, they wouldn't have to be so big because they would be tactile?)

What a wonderful set-up! It's so important for children (or adults) who are learning to use a new symbol system to actually see that it's used by other people and to make it easy for other people in the environment to use the symbols to communicate to the new learner!

I love your giant communication board! Do you use it just for modeling or do your students sometimes use it to?

I think this is fantastic!
